Are Accidents
From God?
"Forasmuch then as the children are partakers
of flesh and blood, He (Jesus) also himself likewise
took part of the same, that through death, He might
destroy him who had the power of death, that is, the
devil." (Hebrews 2:14)
Recently, I heard a preacher tell a story of a couple
he had known that lost a son through accidental death.
He told of how devastated they were, to the point of
hysteria. Then he made this statement: "Sometimes
God will take away our most prized possession for a
reason we don't know right away, but will find out later,
and will cause us to grow as a person." So his
belief was that God kills peoples' children for some
higher purpose. You know, if God was like that, I wouldn't
want to serve Him! The New Testament clearly states
in James 1:17, "Every good gift and every perfect
gift is from above and cometh down from the Father of
lights, in Whom is no variableness, neither shadow of
turning." Is killing a person's only son a good
and perfect gift? I don't think any rational person
could believe such a thing of God, and still want to
serve Him!
But the good news for someone who has lost a loved one,
and through this kind of non-scriptural teaching, become
bitter toward God, is that it WAS NOT GOD who did it!
Our scripture above tells us that the DEVIL has the
power of death! Either directly or indirectly, the devil
is behind ALL death! Jesus said in John 10:10 that "The
thief cometh not but for to steal, and to KILL, and
to DESTROY: I am come that they might have life, and
have it more abundantly." Anything that kills is
from satan.
But, someone might say, why was he taken at such a young
age? Well, usually, even though God gets the blame,
human error is involved in accidents. I don't know what
happened in the case of this boy, but I know of other
cases: I remember a friend at Bible school who had,
some years before, had a HORRIBLE thing happen to him!
He was backing out of his driveway, and ran over his
small son who he didn't know was behind the car! He
told me that he began to immediately say things like,
"God, why did you take my son before his time?"
He became a drunk for many years, and was very bitter
toward God. Later, he heard a sermon like this article,
in which the message was that God loves us, but satan
hates us, and the Lord showed him that He didn't have
anything to do with his son's death. It's an IMPERFECT
world, and accidents happen because of human carelessness!
Now, this man is a happy Christian, because he knows
he can trust a God Who loves him, and only wants good
for him.
I was in a church several years ago, and knew a young
man there who was involved in a fatal auto accident.
That next Sunday, the pastor got up and said that God
moves in mysterious ways, and that he was sure that
God took this man for a good purpose. Well, was it a
good purpose? He left a grieving wife and some small
children, with all the funeral bills, etc. He was doing
good works for others before he died. Some even said
that God needed him in Heaven. No! He was needed much
more here on the earth, and to live out his full time
that God has promised in His Word! Then I read an account
of the accident in the paper, and the police report
said that the young man got impatient in traffic, and
tried to pass on the right. He then hit a soft spot,
and rolled the car. So, even though it was his fault,
God got the blame.
Friend, if you are blaming God for accidents, or sickness,
or anything else that is bad, you are fighting on two
fronts, and the devil is having a ball tormenting you!
We need to realize that we have the devil TOTALLY defeated,
because Jesus destroyed him that had the power of death,
that is the devil; and that our loving heavenly Father
wants ONLY good for us because Jesus "delivered
us from this present evil world, according to the will
of God our Father." (Galatians 1:4)
